Pop Up Card

This ordinary looking card opens and turns into something extra ordinary. Using a very simple technique a water lily unfolds with dragon flies hovering around it. This technique is also used in pop up books to make the images more interactive. I will find this idea helpful in my project.

Sweetcorn Kernel

This little comic strip by Simmone Lia is on the back of a book called 'Pictures and Words,New Comic Art and Narrative Illustration'. There is a clever bit of reverse psychology going on here, as this is on the outside of the book you would see this before you looked inside and although the sweetcorn kernel is telling us its rubbish and we shouldn't read it, it makes you actually want to look inside and find out. You would think a sweetcorn kernel would be a rather inexpressive character but with just a slight alteration to the mouth and position if the arms it manages to be unimpressed, exasperated, resigned and slightly haughty. This subtle technique will be helpful in my project.

Poster for Picasso Exhibition

This poster is for an exhibition of Picasso's lithographs, drawings and sculpture. His signature has been used in three different ways to portray these three areas of his work. They all work well and give a feel of the type of work they represent. I particularly like the middle one, it gives the feeling of freedom and immediacy that comes with drawing. The poster is a very good example of how you can create different ideas just using type.

The Google Logo

The Google logo changes when there is a special day to celebrate. Last week on St Davids Day the letter L had been replaced with a daffodil. Even though letters are replaced with images on these two examples we can still recognise it as 'Google'. The images are also representative of the special day and give the logo an extra dimension, a feeling of that day.

I don't think the Valentines Day logo works as well as the other two, it looks like it says 'Googe'! I also think the chocolate coated strawberry is a bit naff and isn't a very good representation of Valentines Day.

'The Maccabees' Single and CD Cover

The imagery on 'The Maccabees' CD and Single cover compliments the song title 'About Your Dress' with different clothes on the front and back. I saw the 7inch single in a record shop and was drawn to it because of the two holes at the bottom. The cover opens and there are two more images inside, whereas on the outside there are clothes, the inside images show a skeleton and underwear. Each image says something different 'about your dress' You can put your fingers through the holes to make legs which changes the images again depending on what your fingers are like!

Christmas Card

This Christmas card by John Gorham has an overlay that transforms the scene. The top image is wintry but still has some colour. However when the overlay covers it, it creates a cold snowy scene. The white on the overlay covers the colours and makes snowflakes and snow on the trees. This idea could be taken further by adding different overlays to change the season.

TalkTalk Advert

This advert creates images using people that are holding hands. Filmed from above, the joined hands create an outline. The people have different coloured tops on to colour the image and they move to make the image change. Just by the people moving slightly or changing whos hand they are holding creates a different feeling to the advert. For example in my favourite part of the advert, a person blows a tightly packed dandelion clock dandelion clock then all the little people seeds separate and blow away. We follow the seed people as they disperse into the air, this creates a looser more free image than the original one of the person.
